Q: Tell me about Traffic Operations?

A: Please click this link to view "Our Vision" and New Technologies.

Q: How can I get speed humps installed on my road?

A: The County has established a Traffic Calming Program that is available for residents to assist them in dealing with speeding in their neighborhood.  Speed humps are one of a number of options available to help control speeding. To learn more about this program, please read the Traffic Calming Information Sheet and Traffic Calming Request Form.

Q: How can I get a traffic signal installed?

A: Traffic signals aren’t always an asset to traffic control and don’t always prevent accidents. In fact, the installation of an unwarranted signal could result in an increase in the number of accidents.

To determine whether or not the placement of a signal would be effective, engineers compare the existing conditions against nationally accepted minimum guidelines. These guidelines (warrants) have been established from many observations at intersections throughout the country.

Q: How do I get a permit to close a road for a special event?

A: A permit to close a road either entirely or partially for a special event may be obtained under the Forms section of our web page.

Q: How can I get a “Children at Play” sign installed?

A: Although some municipalities have posted these or similar signs in residential areas, no evidence has been presented to document their success in reducing accidents, vehicle speeds, or legal liability. Signs do not and cannot provide an added degree of protection, and if parents and children believe they do, a great disservice results. Children should not be encouraged to play within the roadways. Because of these serious considerations, Polk County Does not recognize the use of “Children at Play” signs.
