BARTOW - (June 16, 2009) – The summer season is often when Public Safety sees the highest rise is misuse of the 9-1-1 emergency system. Students are out of school and looking for things to occupy their time. This misuse ties up the phone lines needed for true emergency situations.
“9-1-1 is to be used ONLY during emergencies. An emergency any event threatening life and safety, requiring the immediate response of police, fire or EMS personnel,” said Rosa Driggs, Public Safety Public Education Officer.
Polk County Public Safety encourages parents to take time and educate their children on the importance of using the 9-1-1 system appropriately, the difference between a non-emergency and a true emergency, and proper 9-1-1 etiquette when speaking with an operator during an emergency call.
When you dial 9-1-1, the person who answers your call is a trained operator. They will ask you questions to determine what kind of help you need – fire, police, or medical. Be prepared to state the nature of the emergency, and please answer all the questions. Answering questions does not delay response. As they ask their questions, remain calm and keep your answers as short and direct as possible.
