Polk County, FL (October 19, 2009) – Polk County students are encouraged to participate in the Ninth Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. essay challenge October 19- November 19. The contest is hosted by the Polk County Board of County Commissioners’ Community Relations Advisory Council, in conjunction with the Community Relations Advisory Council and the Polk County School Board. The topic this year – “Remember! Celebrate! Act! Make it a Day ON, Not a Day Off!”
The word limits for the contest are:
- Elementary School (Grades K-5): 100 word limit
- Middle School (Grades 6-8): 100-200 word limit
- High School (Grades 9-12): 200-300 word limit
Students can submit their entries to Otis Anthony, Senior Director of Diversity Management for the Polk County School Board.
The first place winner for each education level will read his/her essay at the Annual MLK Breakfast on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 at the Bartow Civic Center. Winners will receive savings bonds: $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place and $250 for third place. All essay entries must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Thursday, November 19.
