CSX Closing U.S. 98 east of the South County Jail in West Frostproof
Published on Jan 26, 2021
January 25, 2021 - Starting Wednesday, CSX Transportation will close U.S. 98 between the South County Jail and U.S. 27 in West Frostproof for two days as part of a lengthy track upgrade project. Timing and duration of closure may change based on the progress of related work in Highlands County. During closure, motorists are advised to detour along Avon Park Cutoff Road. Similar track improvements are scheduled to consecutively close another two dozen CSX railroad crossings in February as work advances northerly through Polk County along CSX’s “S-Line.”
The Polk County Board of County Commissioners and County Manager’s Office regret the late public notice and likely traffic disruption motorists will face from this round of successive closures requiring detours. Due to longstanding statutory entitlements, CSX has considerable authority to close their crossings along public and private roadways. Commuters are encouraged to drive carefully and allow for extra drive-time to bypass closure.
Polk County recognizes these repairs are needed and will make for better, safer driving conditions when completed. Anyone wanting to report a railroad crossing issue or complaint should call CSX at 1-800-232-0144 or email them at TellCSX@csx.com.
