Lakeland Highland Scrub Closed After Brush Fire

Published on Jun 2, 2021

A significant brush fire in the Lakeland Highland Scrub Tuesday afternoon has temporarily closed the property, which is part of Polk County’s Environmental Lands Program. The property should reopen by the weekend.

No homes were damaged and no injuries reported in the fire that began about 3:15 p.m. Polk Fire Rescue crews were cleared from the scene shortly before 7 p.m. Crews estimate the fire to be about 30 acres.

The fire, which began after a lightning strike, quickly spread. The Florida Department of Forestry assisted in containing the fire with a tractor and a plow. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office also provided assistance with a drone.
