Bartow, Fla. (July 22, 2021) — Construction on the West Pipkin Road Widening project is about to kick into high gear.
On Tuesday, the Board approved two measures that green light the $42 million construction project west of Lakeland.
The first measure approved is a Joint Project agreement with the City of Lakeland that will allow the county’s road contractor to complete the required relocations of the city’s utility system. The city has agreed to pay the full cost of the relocations along the corridor, which is expected to cost about $6 million.
The Board also approved a $42 million contract with Winter Park-based Hubbard Construction Co. for the widening project, which will expand 3.8 miles of West Pipkin Road and include drainage, signing and pavement markings, traffic signal installation and maintenance of traffic. The project spans from Medulla Road in the west to South Florida Avenue on the east side.
The project also includes widening the section from Medulla Road to Old Highway 37 from two to four lanes. And the section from old Highway 37 to South Florida Avenue is scheduled to expand to three lanes.
