Property Purchase Furthers Road Realignment Project

Published on Dec 15, 2021

The first phase of the Thompson Nursery Road realignment is nearing a reality as the Board approved the purchase of about 140 acres of land through a right-of-way agreement for the first segment of the project Tuesday.

While several smaller property purchases are required before the project can fully move forward, this property purchase, along with another earlier this year totals about 75 percent of the needed property for the first segment.

The nearly $4 million purchase is part of the county’s plans to improve and realign Thompson Nursery Road from West Lake Ruby Drive to U.S. 17 that includes a new alignment for a four-lane corridor. Construction plans and right-of-way maps were developed about a decade ago, but the project was put on hold due to funding. The county is in the process of selecting an engineering firm to evaluate and, if necessary, redesign the designated segments of the planned roadway.

In June, the Board approved a $2.7 million purchase of 48 acres along the eastern side of Cameron Road in Eagle Lake. The property had been slated to become a 107-lot subdivision before the developer approached the county about purchasing the property.
